Almdudler, bitte?

Almdudler. is. the. best.

For those of you who love ginger ale, this stuff is wonderful.

I spent my first weekend in Austria in Gösing with Melissa, the other Wellesley student here, Alexandra, our Austrian program liason/director, and Sarah, a Wellesley grad (red class!) and Alexandra's assistant. We rode a bus two hours East of the city and stayed in the Gösing Alpenhotel, and the plan was to do some orientation stuff like picking classes and talking about internship ideas, and also a lot of hiking. I had no idea I would discover a European soft drink that I might even like more than orange Fanta.
On Saturday the plan was to only do an hour long hike, but Alexandra has misunderstood what the concierge said and we ended up doing the full loop hike, which took about three hours. But it wasworth it. After an especially steep walk we came upon a Gasthof (guesthouse) where Catholic Pilgrims with super thick countryside accents were tethering their horses. Our group walked around to the front of the beautiful house, and Alexandra told us how back in the day, when pilgrims stopped at Gasthofs for something to drink, they only ever asked for Almdudler, which is non-alcoholic. If there was none to have, they kept on their way.

We were lucky to have two beautiful, beautiful days for our hiking trips. Vienna has been very gray and cold since I arrived, quite a shock coming from 90 degree weather in Massachusetts!
